Classroom Lessons: Second Step

Schenevus Central School counselors use the Second Step program and curriculum for elementary grade level (K-6) classroom guidance lessons.  This social-emotional learning and character development program explicitly teaches students effective learning, social, and problem-solving skills. Lessons are adjusted to meet the developmental needs of students at each grade level. We are excited to see the impact Second Step has on the social, learning, and problem-solving skills of the program for our students!

Social-emotional skills — like math skills — build on each other. The universal, classroom-based program, is designed to teach children about skills for learning, how to understand and manage their emotions, control their reactions, be aware of others’ feelings, and have the skills to problem-solve and make responsible decisions. Each grade-level kit includes  short weekly lessons, engaging songs and games, and daily activities and take-home materials to reinforce learning.

Second Step Highlight: Sixth Grade
The sixth grade year is exceptionally important in the Second Step program.  We are working to teach crucial skills to help students transition to middle school and prepare them for increased academic and social pressures.  Such topics include: Empathy & Communication, Bully Prevention, Emotion Management, Problem Solving and Substance Abuse Prevention.
Naviance: 6th Grade
Naviance is a comprehensive K-12 college and career readiness program that helps schools align student strengths and interests to post-secondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life.
Child Protection Unit
The Second Step Child Protection Unit is used to help build student knowledge and awareness about: general safety rules, ways to stay safe, always ask first, touching safety, and never keep secrets about touching.  There are approximately 3-5 lessons, done by a school counselor in the regular classroom.
