Students Take Stage With American Young Voices
Fifth- and sixth-grade students from Schenevus Central School got to perform in front of an arena packed with fans on Tuesday as part of the American Young Voices program.

Schenevus students joined young singers from throughout the Northeast in concert at the Times Union Center in Albany, singing a variety of musical styles with live musical accompaniment. The 3,000-member children’s choir was joined by special guest Manny Cabo from NBC’s “The Voice.”

This is the first time Schenevus has participated in AYV, according to music teacher Montana Kelman, and the experience has been a positive one.

Kelman and her students worked throughout the school year to learn nine pieces of music to perform in the AYV concert, ranging from classical to rock and contemporary.

And the concert, Kelman said, was “a totally different performance experience” than her students had ever experienced — performing on stage in an arena, with stage lights and a full band.

“The whole experience was mind-blowing for the students,” Kelman said. “They loved it — they were just singing their hearts out.”

Kelman said it was exciting for students not only to perform in the concert, but to see the example of the professional musicians who were part of the AYV concert.

“It expanded their horizons,” Kelman said, “and showed them what you can accomplish through practice and hard work.”

The fifth and sixth grades will perform Thursday during the elementary concert at 7 p.m
