Schenevus Students Check Out High-Flying Careers
Schenevus High School students in Don Zaengle’s Energy and Power class recently got a glimpse of a high-flying career path during a visit to Mohawk Valley Community College.
After attending a presentation at Oneonta High School in March, Zaengle’s students visited the Airframe and Powerplant Technology program at MVCC in April. The three-semester certificate program aims to place students directly into jobs in the aviation maintenance industry upon graduation.
“I wish I was 20 again,” Zaengle commented after describing the opportunities available through the program, which boasts a 98 percent employment rate in an industry where starting salaries average $34,000 annually.
While the program at MVCC is hungry for new students, Zaengle noted that the skills students develop in high school are key to succeeding in any post-high school program.
“It’s not just a question of going there,” Zaengle said of the Airframe and Powerplant Technology program. “It’s a question of what you can do when you get there. You’ve got to have the tools to be successful — the math and science skills that you’re learning right now. That’s what is going to make the difference in a career like this.
