Teacher Promoted to Dean of Students
Students returning to Schenevus Central School in the fall will find a new face in the principal’s office — and a new title on the door.
Melissa Leonard was appointed Dean of Students by the Schenevus Board of Education at its June 27 meeting.
Leonard will take over student management from Principal Matthew Wendel, who is leaving the district at the end of June.
According to Superintendent Thomas Jennings, some administrative responsibilities that had previously been assigned to the principal will be shared among other administrative staff.
Jennings noted that the role creates the opportunity for an experienced teacher to progress toward an administrative role.
Leonard is enrolled in a master’s degree program in educational leadership through Niagara University.
“We’re lucky to have someone of this caliber who has earned the respect of students, staff and parents,” Jennings said.
A graduate of the State University College at Oneonta, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in adolescent education, Leonard began her teaching career at Schenevus in 2002. She has taught social studies to students in sixth through ninth grades, and said she is looking forward to this new chapter in her career.
“I believe in this community and this school,” Leonard said. “I’m excited to continue the vision the superintendent has for this school, and make this a school the teachers, students and community are proud of.”
