7th Grade Class

College For Every Student (CFES) is a nonprofit organization committed to raising the academic aspirations and performance of youth so that they can prepare for, gain access to, and succeed in college.

The essence of CFES is the engagement of each student in three high-impact practices:

Pathways to College:    As early as possible, CFES schools - in partnership with colleges - expose students to college as a realistic opportunity.

Mentoring:  Recognizing the educational and personal benefits to students having a relationship with an older, more experienced individuals, CFES schools create mentoring opportunities.

Leadership Through Service:  Because taking responsibility for one's community is a strong determinant of increased student aspirations and engagement, CFES schools create avenues for students to provide service to their schools and community to help foster the qualities and skills of leadership.

25 Mentors visited the campus of Hudson Valley Community College to attend the Capital Region Spring College Fair and Tour HVCC.  Over 150 Colleges were present and available to answer questions from students.  This was a great opportunity for students to explore colleges from all over the country in one location. Dennis Fahey - CFES Regional Director was on hand to talk with students.

7th Grade Trip to SUNY Oneonta

On Monday, March 16, the 7th grade students visited the campus of SUNY Oneonta. The students viewed presentations by Jim Greenberg, from the school's Planetarium, and Dave Geasey, from the Communication Arts Department. Along with the presentations the students got to view dorms, the athletic facility, the library, and the grocery store located on campus. The students were also able to see the threater, located in the Fine Arts Building, on their way to lunch at Wilsbach Dining Hall. In the students journey throughout campus, students were able to identify Schenevus Central School alumni. This provided for some laughs from the students. After a nice lunch, we discussed with Rebecca about the similarities and differences between the 7th grade and college. We decided that there are many similarities such as attendance, dedication, and hard work. In the end we left the students with a piece of advice as they journey through high school, you can always control your attitude and your effort no matter what.

5th Grade Tip to SUNY Cobleskill

On Tuesday March 9, Mrs. Bomba's 5th grade class visited SUNY Cobleskill. We explored the campus; we looked at the dorms, classrooms, and athletic facilities. Although, the most exciting part of the day was learning about the Equine Studies. We learned how SUNY Cobleskill incorporates the study of horses and school subjects, like math, science, english, and social studies. Students were in awe when they learned that you have to weigh a horse in order to decide how much food they have to eat, which without even realizing it they were doing math. We learned about different breeds and the diseases that affect horses, at the same time they were given science and social studies lessons. Lastly, the students learned that english is involved in the study of horses because of the reports that must be written about the horses. Mrs. Bomba's class enjoyed a lunch at the dining hall before heading back home. This trip showed the students that there is a whole wide range of studies in a college setting, but the basic subjects are the building blocks for success.
